Say hello to this quarter's Employee Spotlight, Juan. If you have ever visited our Long Beach branch, you would have been greeted by his warm hospitality and friendly smile. Juan is one of our newest team members but we couldn't imagine the team without him. Here are some fun facts about him:

What do you love most about CalCom?
What I love most about CalCom is the community it brings and the Members that walk in every day. When I started working on loans it brought me joy to realize that this is another step to helping others with their financial needs.

What is your favorite TV show or movie or novel?
My favorite movie is the Japanese Animated Film Akira, it brings you to a place of chaos and rebellion. The movie takes place in post WW3 Japan where terrorism and anti-government protest plague the country. One thing that I love about the movie is that the main character “Kaneda” always kept a positive attitude even through the corruption around him. The movie itself had amazing animations; it was something that I have never seen before. A fun fact about the movie is that the production used a total of 327 different colors, 50 of those colors was exclusively created for the film.

What is your favorite music genre?
I don’t necessarily have a favorite music genre, but I can listen to pretty much everything. I created a playlist and shared it with the staff at CalCom for them to listen to what I believe is creative genius. My favorite artist is Kanye West, although the music label he worked for only saw him as a producer, his true passion was to be a rapper and by his driven personality it led him to has the same number of Grammys as Jay-z who was once labeled as the best rapper of all time.  So yes, my favorite genre is rap.

If there was any problem in the world you could fix, what would it be?
Homelessness. There was a law that was passed on September 3, 2021, by the Los Angeles City Council stating that homeless encampments are banned from various locations in the Los Angeles District. Once I first heard of this it broke my heart to know that people with no homes will be abandoned even from their own city. I don’t see the city making much progress on this issue, but if I had the money, I would create a building complex to shelter the homeless to provide food and rehab programs to help people get back on their feet. It is a stretch, but it is my passion.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“It benefits no one to return unkindness with unkindness.” I believe I saw this quote in a tweet, but once I read this it changed my perspective on life. People do outrageous things when they are angry and most of the time it ends with regret and remorse. So, I try not to let my emotions get the best of me even in hard times.

If you could have any superhero power, what would it be?
If I had a superpower it would have to be teleportation. The reasoning would have to be so that I could stop paying for my car on a monthly basis and I could prevent from coming late to work.
